FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
CAN I APPLY IF I JUST HAVE AN IDEA?
We accept applications from anyone, but preference will be given to applicants with a venture already in the market. Exceptions are made of proven serial entrepreneurs; senior leaders with significant domain experience; or people working full-time on their ideas, which are set to be operational at commencement date of the programme.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND? CAN A VENTURE HAVE MORE THAN ONE FELLOW?
Each venture may bring up to two fellows. The second seat requires an additional fee of R30 000 for a co-founder or senior leader in the venture. Alternatively, if the second fellow is a younger member with strong potential to lead in the future, the fee will be R25 000. The first fellow must be the top decision maker in the venture.
IF I’M NOT A FOUNDER, CEO OR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, CAN I APPLY?
Each venture can submit up to two fellows through the application process. At least one of the applicants must be the most senior person within the venture, while the other team member need only be part of the team.
WHAT TYPES OF APPLICATIONS ARE REJECTED?
We do not consider academic projects or research initiatives. Should you have a specific question about your organisation’s suitability, please contact us.
DOES TRIGA PROVIDE FUNDING?
No, we do not invest or donate directly, but we provide the platform and connections to value-aligned individuals and institutions who do. Additionally, acceptance in the Accelerator programme does not guarantee investments or donations – these depend on a suitable match between you and your venture, and potential partners.
WILL I BE ASSIGNED A MENTOR?
While our core team support throughout the programme, we do no offer matched mentorship. Rather, we create an environment in which mentorship occurs organically – and facilitating this process of relationship building is central to the programme’s construction.
HOW DOES THE PROGRAMME DIFFER WITH REGARDS TO FOR-PROFIT VS. NON-PROFIT VENTURES?
Not much. We believe that for-profit and non-profit ventures should not be hugely different in how they are structured and operated. There are many core topics that are relevant to both types of entities, such as finances, governance, partnering and storytelling and marketing. Our mentors do, however, represent both the for-profit and non-profit sectors, and can offer expert advice and guidance relevant to both sectors.
DOES MY FOR-PROFIT VENTURE HAVE TO BE A “SOCIAL BUSINESS” TO APPLY?
No and yes. The Triga Accelerator is focused on equipping entrepreneurs who feel called to business as a means to do good in the world. This can take many different forms: from having a robust organisational culture that reflects the gospel, to making business decisions that advance the common good, to having a social component built into the business model.
DO I HAVE TO BE A CHRISTIAN TO BECOME A FELLOW?
Yes, we do ask all applicants to affirm the Apostle’s Creed, though we do not have a denominational affiliation. This common set of beliefs is central to the environment we create where we encourage rich conversation among mentors and fellows around the expression of faith in work. However, the people who benefit from the ventures will, in most cases, represent a range of beliefs within the broader community, and is not exclusive to Christians.
IS TRIGA ONLY FOR RELIGIOUS VENTURES?
No, ventures are not required to have a stated religious affiliation or aim. Rather, we offer a community for dialogue between entrepreneurs and leaders – to better understand how to integrate their faith into their unique venture.
CAN I GO TO ONE EVENT AND HAVE ANOTHER CO-FOUNDER ATTEND ANOTHER? WHAT IF I HAVE TO MISS ONE OF THE DAYS BECAUSE OF ANOTHER MEETING?
One of the main benefits of the Triga Accelerator programme is the peer community, so we require all fellows to commit to attending all three events in their entirety. This also applies to additional fellows who are admitted as part of a team. Non-attendance may result in the forfeit of your spot at the final pitch event.
WHAT IF I’M LOCATED OUTSIDE SOUTH AFRICA?
No worries! We’d love to receive your application, even if your venture operates in another African country. This includes ventures based outside Africa, but which focus their resources and impact on Africa. Unfortunately, we do not accept applicants with ventures operating in non-African countries.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE TRIGA ACCELERATOR FINALE?
We support fellows on an ongoing basis by providing them access to our network of mentors and alumni.
